The narrator couldn’t find 65 pounds and suspected Idris, his cook, had taken the money. He fired Adris because of this lost money. But two years later, the day before he was leaving the country, a friend found the 65 pounds in a magazine he had given him. So he had terribly wronged Idris and there was no chance to put it right!
