Carpe Diem Tradition

A tradition dates back to classical Greek and certain poetry, particularly popular among English Cavalier poets. Carpe diem means literally “seize the day”, that is “live for today”. The carpe diem theme is epitomized in a line from Robert Herrick’s “To the virgins, to Make Much of Time”; and “ Gather ye rosebuds, while you may.”
