A twelve-syllable line of verse, possibly owes its name to French medieval poems about Alexander the Great. It is common in French poetry but unusual in English, where the commonest line length is of ten syllables. The famous use of which is in the last line of the Spenserian stanza, invented in his Faerie Queene.
