pragmatics

Pragmatics is the study of how context (e.g. time, place, social relationship between speaker and hearer, and speaker’s assumptions about the hearer’s beliefs) influences the interpretation of meaning. Another general definition is that it is the study of how speakers of a language to communicate in utterances.
