diglossia

the term diglossia, first used by Ferguson in 1959, refers to a socialinguistic situation similar to bilingualism. but instead of two different languages, in a diglossic situation two varieties of a language exist side by side throughout the community, with each having a definite role to play. it is a matter of formality in nature.
